These couple of weeks have been especially eventful for all students at St Augustine’s Priory. Senior sports day took place on Monday 26th of June and was a key highlight of the week. There were a wide range of field and track activities; from 100m, hurdles, javelin, tug of war, high jump and finishing with the relay. Everyone participated with full endeavour, whether via competing or supporting their house.
“I’m not much of a sportsman myself, so I came to Sports Day to lift the spirits and I’m very happy I was able to contribute to my house.” – Donya Asi, Year 10
This Sports Day was particularly successful, with several school records being broken across all the year groups and in a variety of events.
Maria Gomes Bergamasco in Year 8, who broke the 300m and high jump record, stated “I feel very proud and I feel like I have tried very hard to get to the point I am now”.
Likewise Solaris Salvucci De Oliveira in Year 10, broke 3 school records: hurdles, discus and javelin, in what would be her last Sports Day! She was in fact awarded the Victrix Ludorum (overall champion of the day) and stated “I was training all year round to excel in Sports Day for my house…the fact that I broke three records on my last Sports Day gave me a sense of fulfilment and happiness to finish with such an achievement”.
As well as sporting achievements, people’s supportive spirits and camaraderie were also congratulated. Dalia Nasserelddine in Gabriel’s, Donya Asi in Michael’s, Grace Munro in George’s and Niamh Gallen in Raphael’s were awarded the Spirits of the House awards. Donya in Year 10, said “I’m not much of a sportsman myself, so I came to Sports Day to lift the spirits and I’m very happy I was able to contribute to my house.”
Sports Day was a wonderful and successful event, in particular for St Michael’s – the house which was the overall champion of the day. In fact, St Michael’s broke both the Year 9 and Year 10 relay records. What’s even more spectacular, is that this house has won Sports Day twice in a row!
In summary, Sports Day brought the senior school community together, and encouraged everyone to embrace determination and sportsmanship values.
