Road Safety Week

By Layla Baboli

Last week, schools across Ealing borough came together to take part in Road Safety Week, a nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness of the dangers on UK roads. Each year, over 1,700 people lose their lives in road accidents, with five fatalities occurring every day. An additional 80 people are injured daily, making road safety a crucial issue for everyone.

At our school, the week-long initiative focused on helping students understand how to stay safe and prevent accidents. Year 5 and 6 ambassadors represented our school by attending a special event at Greenford Hall, organized by Ealing Council and Transport for London (TfL). They joined other primary school pupils from across Ealing borough to learn about safer and more sustainable ways to travel to and from school.

The event, called the TfL Travel Explorers Day, included interactive talks and hands-on activities such as obstacle courses and scooter training to teach students about safely crossing roads and being more aware of their surroundings. Miss Lee and the school’s eco-ambassadors also attended, bringing back valuable lessons and awareness to the rest of the school.

As part of the campaign, students focused on raising awareness about the added risks of winter driving. With darker mornings and evenings, they encouraged their peers to “Be Bright, Be Seen” by wearing reflective badges. These badges were sold at school, and informative leaflets were handed out during lunchtimes to remind everyone of the importance of staying visible.

The week had students and teachers coming together to promote road safety and help reduce the number of accidents on UK roads. Events like these not only teach vital skills but also help spread awareness about the simple actions everyone can take to save lives.
