How Has Modern Society Developed Our Individual Personalities?

By Orla Leonard

Over the years our society has changed so much with every year something new coming in. “Out with the old in with the new” as they say. Whether it’s new fashion trends, more advanced technology or new social media platforms, our society is ever changing.

Fashion

First of all, fashion is a big factor in developing our individual personalities, it helps express our identity whether it’s our personal tastes, beliefs values or cultural backgrounds. Fashion trends have become more popular each year, with no year without a new trend, especially with social media promoting all sorts of brands and online shopping being a major resource in most of our lives now. Everyone has their own individual styles which help our different identities shine through, showing how no two people are the same! In our modern day society there are no restrictions in fashion styles. It is no longer limited to traditional gender norms , with many people embracing distinctive and unique styles which has allowed people to break barriers in the fashion world as we see through fashion weeks across the world.

Furthermore, social media has revolutionised our society, as it has quickly shaped the way we live our everyday lives. Majority of people use social media everyday, whether it’s TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp or Facebook. It has undoubtedly changed the way we communicate and express ourselves. Our society has completely changed because of how people try and fit in with social media norms or expectations with many people shaping their lives due to how many likes or followers they have on social media. Social media has created a new digital world for us, whether people view it as a good or bad aspect of life.

Technology

Following on from social media, technology in general has drastically changed our lives which shapes our personality, whether it’s phones, computers or iPads. Many will agree they cannot go a day without using one of these devices. It has helped us unlock a whole new world of information, particularly resources such as google where accessing information has never been made easier. Within a few clicks of a button we can now access political information, entertainment or socials. This has a huge part to play in how we shape our values and opinions and inevitably our personalities.

Education

Leading on from this, education plays a vital role in shaping our personalities, it changes how we think, interact and engage with others and how it leads us to approach the world around us. Education keeps advancing as technology does. This is proven as we now see in our everyday lives as students how the interactive whiteboard has replaced chalk boards. Education pushes us to explore all aspects of our personalities, helping us prepare for our future. However, whilst online learning has helped us improve it also decreases our interaction and face to face conversations which can have a negative effect on our self esteem when spending too much time on a screen.

On a whole, as our society continues to develop we continue to adapt and change our personalities whether it’s our fashion sense, social media influence or just our everyday interactions with others we are constantly finding new interests as our world is ever changing.
