On the 8th of May 5,000 people gathered in the Royal Albert Hall to give Sir David Attenborough a thunderous standing ovation as they celebrated his one hundredth birthday. He himself mentioned that he had hoped to celebrate quietly, but admitted he was completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of love.

Sir David Attenborough is a name known by millions all over the world and has immensely impacted the way many people view our planet. He is a legendary English broadcaster, natural historian and conservationist. But most importantly he is seen as a national treasure.

It all started with a young boy in Leicester who spent his days collecting fossils and salamanders. What once started as a hobby turned into a life-long passion. In 1952, at the age of 26, Sir David Attenborough joined the BBC without even owning a TV before. In 1954 he presented, created and produced ‘Zoo Quest’ which was his first big hit which showed glimpses of rare animals and undiscovered worlds for people in the comfort of their homes. Sir David Attenborough was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1985 specifically for his service to television.

That was just the beginning. Since then he has had many massive achievements, for example writing and narrating the life collection which was a 30 year project that mapped every major group of animals and planets on Earth. He not only produced never-before-seen footage but also pushed filming boundaries, from the first infrared cameras to the drone-shot epics of ‘Planet Earth’.

A pivotal point in his career was when he decided to stop simply showing us the “Gan Eden” but instead started showing us how we are destroying it, turning him into an environmental activist. He focuses on his role as the witness who has seen more of the natural world than any other human in history, determined to warn and show us the impact human intervention has on our planet and its species.

His shows have led to real world changes, like the global ban on microbeads and the surge in ocean conservation. He has also called for action: “It’s surely our responsibility to do everything within our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on earth.” But he has also called for hope: “Nature is our biggest ally and our greatest inspiration”.

Sir David Attenborough has taught, inspired and warned millions of his viewers to care, help and enact the change that the planet so desperately needs. And that is the reason why 5,000 thousand people stood in attendance of him last Friday with a standing ovation, with many more from the public thanking him for all the work he has done helping to save this planet, and wishing him a Happy Hundredth Birthday.
