With the rise of artificial intelligence and its rapid implementation across almost every aspect of modern life, concerns are growing about the potential impact of AI within the book-publishing industry.

Some of the most influential novels in history were written during moments of great social change. Classics such as “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, and “1984” by George Orwell captured powerful themes that reflected the world around them. These works explored issues such as patriarchy and women’s rights, racial injustice, and the dangers of government surveillance and totalitarian states. Their impact came not only from their stories, but also from the human experiences and emotions behind them.

AI-Generated Books Impacting Authors

For many writers, the rise of AI has also brought growing anxiety about the future of their careers. AI systems are now capable of analysing thousands of books and mimicking an author’s style, sometimes even producing work that resembles the voice of well-known writers.

Many authors argue that this raises serious ethical questions. Their writing may be used to train AI systems without permission, and some fear that their creative identities could be copied or misrepresented. As a result, writers are increasingly calling for greater transparency, stronger copyright protections, and clear consent before their work is used to train artificial intelligence.

Beyond legal concerns, there is also a deeper cultural worry. If AI begins producing large amounts of content, the value of human storytelling may become diluted. Reading could shift from a meaningful exchange of human perspectives to something far more mechanical and detached.

AI-Generated Books Impacting the Environment

Another issue that is often overlooked is the environmental impact of AI. The powerful computers that run AI systems require enormous amounts of electricity and water to operate. Data centres must work constantly to process information and keep machines cool, which contributes to carbon emissions and increased energy consumption.

As the demand for AI-generated content grows, so too may the environmental cost. While AI can offer speed and efficiency, it also raises questions about whether the benefits outweigh the long-term environmental consequences.

AI-Generated Works Impacting Readers

The rise of AI-generated books may be changing the way people read. Instead of a deep, emotional, and immersive experience, reading risks becoming a quicker and more superficial activity. There is something uniquely powerful about human-written novels. Perhaps it is the complexity of the characters, the creativity of the storytelling, or the profound messages that resonate with readers across generations.

However, as AI-generated content becomes more common, reading may become shorter, faster, and highly personalised. While this may sound convenient, it could reduce readers’ patience and willingness to engage with long-form narratives. If everything is designed to be quick and tailored to individual preferences, the joy of discovering challenging ideas and unfamiliar perspectives may slowly disappear.

I orchestrated a survey which included the following questions and results:

The Future of Storytelling

AI may have the ability to generate stories, but it cannot fully replicate the lived experiences, emotions, and cultural perspectives that shape human creativity. Books have always been more than just words on a page. They are reflections of the societies and people who create them. As technology continues to evolve, the challenge will be finding a balance between innovation and protecting the human voices that have shaped literature for centuries.

By Esinam Asima The rise of Ai books poses an issue for creativity and society As AI begins writing stories, what happens to human creativity? “Predictable, generic, and, frankly, boring” – this is how the Greenleaf Book Group described books written by AI.
